I dont get this?

i dont get htis problem, how can molecules have valence electrons?

Q: How many valence electrons do the following elements, ions, or molecules have?

1) HNO3

2) HSO3-1

Answer:
Valence electrons are the electrons which have the highest n value. For representative elements, it is also the same as the group number.

For H it is 1, N has 5, O has 6, S has 6

So HNO3 has 1 + 5 + 3(6) or 24

HSO3- has 1 + 6 + 3(6) + 1 (extra which gives the - charge) or 26
sulfite, HSO3 has the valence (-1), it is a radical

HNO3 - nitric acid, has the valence 0
