The Kerosine is put into the tank of the lamp and the pump is used to build up air pressure in the tank.
When you open the valve to light the lamp, the pressure forces the kerosine through a tiny nozzle that 'Atomises' the kerosine. (Reduces the pressure while producing a fine Kerosine gas like mist.
This mixes with air (oxygen) of the atmosphere and, is easily ignited as it enters the Mantle. This is a very fine, silk mesh that, when the Kerosine mist ignites, the mantle glows with a bright, yellowish, white light.
