The fuel and the engine that uses it was invented/ discovered by a man named Diesel, a German scientist at the almost the turn of the century, 1900. It pre dates the gas burning engine. See wikipedia.
To add on to the first answer, it is simply one of the fossil fuels discovered that came about due to the decomposition of the dinosaurs and other prehistoric life. It is prepared with other minerals, and is just used as an energy source. It can do this because it exerts alot of energy, while consuming very little.
Mentally friendly than onsite production due to its higher efficiency and the ... produce hydrogen, including fossil fuel sources with and without carbon .
