The fuel and the engine that uses it was invented/ discovered by a man named Diesel, a German scientist at the almost the turn of the century, 1900. It pre dates the gas burning engine. See wikipedia.
To add on to the first answer, it is simply one of the fossil fuels discovered that came about due to the decomposition of the dinosaurs and other prehistoric life.
