Which is more toxic an alcohol or a phenol ? and which is more reactive ?
Answer:
which alcohol?
there are a lot of alcohol : methanol, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, butanol, etc
the most common alcohol is ethanol.
If u compare ethanol with phenol, phenol is more poisonous
As I said in the earlier question, phenol is more toxic. Phenol is also many orders of magnitude more acidic than alcohol.
why dont you try?
it is not a fair question. alcohol is a huge functional group. while most pple tend to get frightened when dealing with phenol, due to mild carcinogenic effects, some alcohols, some as low membered as methanol are just as toxic.
phenol is more reactive in the sense that it undergoes a wider range of reactions. the hydroxyl substituent being an activating group makes the aryl ring even more susceptibe to electrophilic attack than benzene.
however alcohols are more reactive in terms of nucleophilic substitutions.
Toxicity depends on the quantity / doses.Reactivity of Alcohol and phenol depends on the reactant. Usualy alcohol is more reactive.
