When 0.579 g of an unknown compound are dissolved in 200 mL of solution, the osmotic pressure was observed to be 39 torr at 25°C. What is the molecular weight of the compound?

Answer:
Osmotic pressure = n RT / V
osmotic pressure = (mass / MM) RT/V
MM = mass RT / osmotic pressure x V
T = 25 + 273 =298 K
V = 0.200 L
osmotic pressure = 39 / 760 = 0.0513 atm
Molecular weight = 0.579 x 0.0821 x 298 / 0.0513 x 0.200 = 1384 g / mol
