Would you use an acid or a base to clean of rust on an iron pot?

Give an example of what you might use. Thanks!

Answer:
well you could use Whink rust remover. it is a dilute solution of hydrofluoric acid.
get some ajack.
acid base (hydrochloric). look at "Navel jelly" and wash very well when done.
Given that iron oxide is not amphoteric, you'd want a mild acid (to spare the metal). Adding a hard Lewis base complexing agent will drive the desired reactions by grabbing Fe(III). Look at the contents of Lime Away or CLR.
