Does heating up rust produce anything dangerous?

I'm referring to gases.

Answer:
No.

"Rust" is traditionally the name of the red/brown oxide/hydroxide of metallic Iron. Heated in air, it reverts to a dark brown oxide, Fe2O3. Neither Iron, rust nor oxygen are toxic. No combination of these materials are toxic, either. Rust can permenantly stain concrete, however.

Iron ore in the form of rust is heated with charcoal to make metallic iron, however. Besides liquid iron, the other by product is carbon dioxide. If done on a large scale, some carbon may form carbon monoxide, and this is a very toxic gas. Sometimes the ore contains iron sulfide. When heated, the products include sulfur dioxide. This is also toxic, but not as much as carbon monoxide.
