For any chemistry/cooking whiz: I was heating water to make spaghetti. I added a spoonful of salt and then...?
Answer:
Adding salt to water will increase its boiling point slightly.
Additional heat has to be added to get the water to this higher temperature.
By the way, adding salt also decreases the freezing point of water. This is why salt is spread on roads when it snows.
Does it have to do with the mass of the water? I dont' know! Tell me!
well the water was already boiling but without salt so when u added it the salt had reach the same temperature as the water before it started boiling again. totally normal
Because salt makes water have a higher boiling point so adding salt means the water must get even warmer to boil, it took a little bit after you added the salt to hit that temp
The salt lowered the temperature of the water. When the water reached boiling temperature again, it started to boil again.
Any non-volatile dissolvable impurity will cause the boiling point of another substance to be raised, in this case it is water.
Similarly it also lowers the freezing point, thats why when you use grit in the winter on icy roads, it melts the ice by lowering its freezing point due to the salt contained within the grit.
