Copper Sulphate + ammonium hydroxide?
1. Can you please tell me the equation before ammonium hydroxide is exceeded in this reaction?
I saw precipitation formed.
2. Can you also show me the equation after ammonium hydroxide is exceeded in this reaction?
The precipitation was disappeared and the colour of solution was royal blue. Can you please explain why that happened?
*The final product was copper tetraammine.
Answer:
1) CuSO4 + 2NH4OH = Cu(OH)2 + (NH4)2SO4 simple precipitation (Cu(OH)2 has low solubility in water)
2) Cu(OH)2 + 4NH3 = Cu(NH3)4 (2+) + 2OH-
(or Cu(OH)2 + 4NH4OH = Cu(NH3)4(2+) + 4H2O + 2OH-)
a tetraamminecopper(II) complex is highly soluble in water. The precipitate dissolves because the formation constant for the complex is very high and drives Cu(OH)2 <--> Cu2+ + 2OH- to the right.Chemmmmm help?
