How can you predict if 2 substances will form a solution?

For example, would water and methanol form a solution? And how can you figure this out?

Answer:
From the molecular structures H2O and CH3OH, both substances are polar. Note the difference in electronegativies. See tables.

And from the principle of "LIKE DISSOLVES LIKE", then methanol and water will mix to form a solution.
