Why the windscreen of a car broke during a hot afternoon?
Answer:
the glass molecules receive energy from the heat which loosens their intermolecular bonding.hence the space between the molecules increases.overall this leads to expansion in the glass.as no space is available for the glass to expand it develops cracks and finally breaks.
Without knowing the specifics;
There might have been a flaw or defect in the glass. High ambient temperatures caused thermal expansion of the glass. This could cause mechanical stress around the defect, and at some point the stress was relieved by a fracture at the stress point.
Designers allow for heat expansion - I would bet that the car had some kind of collision at one time that altered the windshield fit. It had to be under some kind of stress for what you describe, other than just temperature..
