Is sucking the helium out of a balloon bad for your health in any way?
Answer:
I agree with the answers pointing out that you should breathe between amounts of helium. Keep in mind that you do have some O2 in your lungs and trachea as you breathe in the helium. Since He is an intert gas, it will not react with anything, so breathing in helium is akin to holding your breath. Also, if you did too much He, you would pass out before any brain damage. This is the body's way of protecting itself by conserving energy (and oxygen) for the brain.
In reagrds to the replacing N2 with He for diving purposes, i remember some Costeau (spelling!) films on TV from the late 60's and 70's. Listening to them speak French in a Donald Duck voice was funny!!
This replacement suggestion was made by a chemist, Joel Hildenbrand (of longtime UC Berkeley tenure).
My siblings and I have been doing it for years and are all still alive...
the only thing would be lightheadedness and maybe dizzyness if you really go overboard. you really have nothing to worry about
"... inhaling it [helium] from a typical commercial source, such as that used to fill balloons, can be dangerous due to the number of contaminants that may be present. These could include trace amount of other gases, in addition to aerosolized lubricating oil."
It depends on where you get the helium
yes, it kills brain cells, and if taking to much at once you can burst your lungs
In addititon to what has already been posted, inhaling helium also prevents the brain from receiving the necessary amount of oxygen. This can kill brain cells and make you dumber.
Nothing... but:
If the He is pure and your suck it for many minutes, you would die (you need to breath oxygen)
As Helium is a inert gas and dont have toxicity, the deep diver uses a mix of O2 and He when going down in the sea. The He in the tank is replacing the N2... The N2 can form bubbles in the blood if the diver rises too fast. The He dont form that bubbles
If you breathe in helium, make sure to stop after a couple breaths so your brain can get enough oxygen. It could make you pass out.
i've done it many times and i'm perfectly fine. my science teacher told me that it's not terrible for your health unless you cut of your source of oxygen for too long. as long as you breath in between and don't keep sucking helium continuously then you'll be okay.
Helium would have to totally replace all of the oxygen in your lungs for it to hurt you badly. As said before, it makes you dizzy and talk pretty cool, obviously, but nah you'll be fine as long as you take a few breaths of fresh air amidst the helium indulgence.
I think it kills brain cells. My dad says that helium is an inert gas, it doesn't react with anything
It can kill you.
Not inhaling the appropriate amount of oxygen per the pressure you are at can kill brain cells. You can die if you breathe in helium if that is all that you are inhaling. Will inhaling some helium balloons kill you - probably not, but you are going to deprive some of your brain cells of O2 and some will die.
If you only breathed in helium, you wouldn't get O2 and you would die
