Everybody above is absolutly wrong. I don't know what the chemical name is, but common table salt has Iodine in it.
Why?
It's so that your thyroid gland can absorb it. Without Iodine, our thyroid glands would swell, and we would all die. Aren't you glad everyone above was wrong?
