What is exciton binding energy??

I know what an exciton is, but I can't really understand why having a large exciton BE would be good for a material to be used in photochemical reactions...

An exciton is a bound state of an electron and an electron hole (an imaginary particle in an insulator or semiconductor).

Binding energy is the mechanical energy required to disassemble a whole into separate parts.

So, exciton binding energy, aka “kT “, is the mechanical energy required to separate and electron from the electron hole.
