Mechanical Mixture, Compound, Solution, or Element?

pure rain water

a ceramic tea cup

a blueberry muffin

a concrete building block

a diamond crystal

a silver ring

a plastic spoon

a room of air

an aluminum can

ocean water

Answer:
pure rain water is a solution. remember rain is not pure anymore. It is a solution of pollutants such as SO2 in water.

a ceramic tea cup- compound They are typically crystalline in nature and are compounds formed between metallic and nonmetallic elements such as aluminum and oxygen, calcium and oxygen, and silicon and nitrogen.

a blueberry muffin - mixture of blueberries, flour, milk, eggs, well you get the idea.

a concrete building block - mixture of cement, sand and/or stones/gravel

a diamond crystal- element. A diamond is one of the three allotropes of carbon

a silver ring- element. As long as it is pure silver

a plastic spoon- is a compound. It is two or more elements chemically combined to form plastic.

a room of air- mixture. A mixture of oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen etc

an aluminum can- element. If it is a pure aluminum can with no label then it is an element. If it is lets say a soda can, it is a mixture of aluminum and dyes.

ocean water- solution. It is a solution of salt dissolved in water..
pure rain water-Compound:H2O

a ceramic tea cup-compound
a blueberry muffin-mixture

a concrete building block-compound mixed with sand

a diamond crystal-pure carbon-element

a silver ring-element,silver, but likely an alloy with some copper or nickel

a plastic spoon-compound

a room of air-mixture, oxygen, nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide

an aluminum can-element

ocean water-mixture H2O and NaCl (water and salt)

Thanks billgoats79...Ooops! I actually missed No.4 concrete block ..Mixture.
The other guys have errors:
sea water is a solution with dissolved salts and such, also any mixture of gases is a solution on the first guy.
Norrie! omg I cant believe you said that! A concrete block is NOT and element!

pure rain water -compound

a ceramic tea cup - mechanical mixture (tempted to say compound because its made out of a mineral but it can really a bunch of things such as dyes and sand they mixed in)

a blueberry muffin - mechanical mixture (are you kidding! theres bluberries in it)

a concrete building block- mechanical mixture (sand limestone or gypsum mixed)

a diamond crystal - element just carbon

a silver ring- element just silver metal

a plastic spoon -compound usually a specific polymer(which is a large compound)

a room of air - solution all gases in solution with each other

an aluminum can -element just aluminum metal

ocean water - solution ...many things dissolved here
These questions are always misleading- the answer really depends on clarifying what exactly the sample contains and the condition it is in:

What is pure rain water? Rain water is H2O (a compound) but has other substances dissolved in it (carbonic acid) from interaction with gases in the atmosphere. If its "pure" rain water, its not really rain water. Its just pure water.

A silver ring? - Silver is silver, a pure element, but jewelry is not made usually made from pure Ag. The reason is that it tarnishes quickly from reaction with O2. As a result, silver jewelry is usually a homogeneous mixture of silver and other metals (like copper), called an alloy.

A room of air- are there people in it? Breathing out CO2 will prevent this entire room from being considered a solution. Also, the small vertical difference in concentration of molecules due to the force of gravity means that the mixture is not homogenous and not a solution.

Ocean water: Seen this asked before as a synonym for "salt water". In which case, solution is usually listed as the correct answer. In reality, ocean water is probably a suspension of small organic particles or sediment. Also, this answer needs to specify the samplng method (a cup of water from the surface or a cubic foot 1-mile deep sample).

My point is this, I think this type of problem is useful as a discussion. It gets students to think and argue about the definitions of mixture, solution, etc. It is not the kind of question that has one right or wrong answer without explanation.
