Chem safety?

What are some clothing/ accessories that are inappropriate in a lab? And why?

Answer:
Long un-tied back hair: could potentially fall, move into chemicals on bench, bunsen burner flame etc
Exposed footware (FlipFlops etc): If chemicals spill onto floor, would burn straight onto skin with no protection. Broken glassware also hazard.
Lack of long trousers: Again to protect against chemical spills onto bare legs.
Lab coats, goggles, optional gloves depending on what is happening, are all good safety wear.
Open toed shoes and loose clothing or jewelry come to mind immediately.

Open toed shoes will not protect your feet from any spills.

Loose clothing or jewelry can catch on glassware and cause spills. Loose clothing can also catch fire if you are using open flames in the lab.
Open toed shoes, shorts, not wearing goggles. In the lab, you work with many different chemicals, and with open shoes, shorts and no goggles you face the risk of burning feet, legs and eyes with all sorts of volatile, oxidative and combustible chemicals.
- Untied hair can get dipped into chemicals
- Polyester clothing is bad - polyester is a plastic and will melt
- Cotton and wool clothing are flammable

Hence the need to wear a lab coat.
Flowing garments, synthetics, tight fitting clothes, woolens

These garments can easily be damaged by fire and won't come off the body in a hurry.
