Zinc granules in acidified tin(II) chloride solution?

Why is it that when zinc granules are dropped into the solution it turns grey and after it is removed and pressed, it turns back to silver and hard?

Answer:
Zinc granules will displace the tin from SnCl2 hence forming ZnCl2 which will dissolve leaving tin as a precipitate, which is grey in colour.now if you remove the tin from the solution and press it,it will form a piece of metallic tin which appears silver in colour.
When u add Zn granules to stannous chloride solution a redox reaction takes place. The redox potential for the Zn ion to Zn is more negetive than the the redox potential of Sn2+ toSn and hence the overall potential is positive and hence Zn reduces stannous ion to metallic tin.
