Using electrolysis with water, is there any subtitute for salt...?

because i dont want any hazzards during this experiment.
also, if you know, what is the ratio for water to saltijn the experiment.
and also can you still use electrolysis effectively without the salt.

Answer:
Anything that dissolves and ionizes will work. More electrolyte gives higher elecrtical conductuvity. Table salt is as harmless as you will get. Washing soda and Calgonite are caustic. Borax might be interesting - unless it gives forth with a horrible smell (boranes - toxic and flammable). Try it (slightly caustic).

Place the electrodes close but not touching to minimize solution ohmic resistance losses.

NaCl will give you chlorine at the anode not oxygen. If you want oxygen try sodium carbonate (washing soda) or borax.
Nuclear submarines use Lythium hydroxide for electrolysis. pretty much anything that makes water conductive will work. Sugar actually works and is much less dangerous. (no chance of chlorine) Baking soda works also, although it dosen't disolve as well. soap also will make the water conductive.
