Balancing the equation?
Answer:
Actually,
water + sulfur dioxide = sulfurous acid
SO2 + H2O → H2SO3
water + sulfur trioxide = sulfuric acid
SO3 + H2O → H2SO4
Usually this occurs by making sulfurous acid first, then sulfuric.
SO2 +H2O--->H2SO3
2H2SO3 +O2--->2H2SO4
H2O + SO2 --> H2SO4
this equation cannot be balanced as it is
there must be some product missing
however, you could add water and sulfur dioxide to make sulfurous acid:
H2O + SO2 --> H2SO3
the sulfurous acid can then be oxidized to form sulfuric acid
2H2SO3 + O2 --> 2H2SO4
2H2O(l)+2SO2(g)__2H2SO4(Aq)
Trick about balancing equations is that make sure that the number of H's,O's,S's etc. in the reactants is the same with that in the products.
I have 4 H's,8 O's,2 SO4's
