Here's a fun one based on a question somebody asked the other day. It's health-related, which is a big topic these days. And it doesn't take any serious chemistry knowledge, or hard-to-find chemicals. Why don't you test the fat content of a number of different kinds of potato chips. You grind up the chips into a pulp, and then extract them with an organic solven like hexanes. You could even use gasoline if you can't find hexanes (just be careful, or course). You then evaportate off the solvent (very carefully - do not use flames - it could ignite the solvent) and weigh the residual fat that's left over. It's a fun experiment, relevant to today's culture, and easy to perform. It may be even more fun to combine it with a common taste test, right? So just set up a taste test between potato chips, and find out which ones people like best, or worst. Then see if it correlates with the fat content. Fat tastes good - that's why it's in so many foods. It would be interesting to see if, in potato chips, it correlates with public opinion. You could even go a step further and do some market research to look at sales. Does fat content correlate with sales?
The title would be: "Fat: so bad, or soooo good?"
Or anything like that. That's kind of cheesy, but you get the idea.
