Would you reommend Analytical Chemistry?
so this is a somewhat random question but does anyone know something about analytical chemistry? because I am considering taking an intro course of analytical chem and I have only taken gen chem before this. I really like thermodynamics so if it somewhat like that i probably would like it i guess.
Answer:
If you like math analytical chemistry is actually a fun class, focusing on labs and equations. Thermodynamics is more in physical chemistry. Personally I thought analytical was the most useful chemistry class of all of them, as well as being interesting, but then again... I love the laboratory and math aspect of chemistry.
If you have completed general chemistry you should be ready for a course in analytical chem. I would take it. There is some math but it in not too difficult. The labs can be fun. Good luck with you decision.
Well, you can take this after taking gen chem (1 year), I think it is much better to take it now instead of after you clog your mind up with organic chemistry and biochem.
There's a lot of math and algebra involved and you need to remember some of the inorganic chemical reactions from gen chem like what compounds form precipitates. There's a little thermodynamics, but it is mainly stoichiometry problems and a lot of titrations, buffers and acid base chemistry.
If you don't mind that, go for it because now is the best time to do it.
Also, two words: GROUP WORK
If you like thermodynamics I would really suggest physical chemistry. Although analytical chemistry requires knowledge of thermodynamics, you'll really get to the guts of thermodynamics in a physical chemistry course (along with Quantum Mechanics/Dynamics).
Analytical chemistry involves learning the theory of various analytical methods and doing careful lab work. Labs will test your technique (did you get the correct answer?) and your knowledge and understanding of the methods' basis.
If it is not a requirement, don't take it.
The lecture portion is easy but the lab is an Evil.
You are going to spend a lot of time for the lab
