How many moles of C02 can be produced by the reaction 5.0 mol of C2H4 and 12.0 mol of O2?

Answer:
As usual, the first move is to construct the balanced equation. Here, we have:
C2H4 + 3O2 -> 2CO2 + 2H2O.
We have a limiting reagent; twelve moles of oxygen can burn only four moles of ethane, and that will produce eight moles of CO2.
Well here is the reaction:
C2H4 + 3O2 >> 2CO2 + 2H2O

Therefore you would need 1 mole of C2H4 to react with 3 moles of O2 or 4 moles of C2H4 to react with 12 moles of O2 to produce 2 moles of CO2. You only have 12 moles of O2 available which is the limiting reagent. Therefore you can only produce 2 moles with one mole of C2H4 in excess.
