Scientific Notation?

1. (2.34 x 10^65)+(9.2x10^66)
2. (313.0) - (1.2 x 10^3)
Please show work or explain

Answer:
well first thing you gotta do if you aren't using a calculator is get them in the same frame of reference. By that i mean get the exponents the same.

e=10^

1.) 2.34e65 + 9.2e66 would be the same as
0.234e66 + 9.2e66
or 2.34e65 + 92e65

because when you move the decimal right, the factor of ten increases and vice versa.
so the answer is

9.434e66 it could also be written and 94.34e65 but scientific notation typically is written with one number before the decimal

2.) 313.0 - 1.2e3 is
.313e3 - 1.2e3 because you move the decimal 3 digits left or
313.0 - 1200 because you move the decimal 3 left
and equals
-887 or -8.87e2
Right out of the calculator: ~
Microsoft's Powertoy Calculator.

(2.34*10^65)+(9.2*10^66)
9.434e66
(313.0) - (1.2*10^3)
-887
All it is is that you move the decimal the number of places of the exponent. And since the ones in question one are way too large to do by hand, you need a scientific calculator.
So you would type 2.34 EXP 65 + 9.2 EXP 66 = 9.434 x 10^66.
2. -887

The second one is easier, all you have to do is move the dec. 3 places to the right to = 1200
313-1200= -887
^ generally refers to power.
1. (2.34 x 10^65)+(9.2 x 10^66)
=(2.34 x 10^65)+(92 X 10^65)
=94.34 x 10^65
=9.434 x 10^66
2. (313.0)-(1.2 x 10^3)=313.0-1200
=-887
=-8.87 x 10^2

Take note that the answer is usually expressed as a X 10^9, where 'a' is between 1 and 10.
