what are oxygen vacancies in crystals and why are they important? i'm studying zirconia and this seems to be an important point

Answer:
Just as the name implies there are little little vacancies in the crystal that are formed as oxygen leaves. These vacancies can weaken the crystal. This could be a reason why cubic zirconia isn't as hard as a diamond.
