which physical and chemical properties would indicate that calcium and magnesium belong to the same group or family of elements?
Answer:
-both have the same number of electrons in their last electron shell (2 electrons)
-both form white substances, when reacting with acids
-the salts of both elements are insoluble in water
if i remember correctly, the group is determined by the number of valence electrons. calcium and magnesium both have 2 valence electrons and are in the same group.
Physical properties: both are metals, so everything that goes with that (conducts electricty, etc)
Chemical properties: both usually take on a +2 charge, So Compounds would look like MgO, CaO, MgSO4, CaSO4, Mg(OH)2, Ca(OH)2
