Why would a chemist, if he/she didn’t have good analytical software, take the inverse of one variable or square one variable or even take the log of one variable and then plot the data?

Answer:
Because if that data is plotted on a graph and results in a near straight line of best fit, then the chemist will know that there is a high chance of the two variables having some sort of mathematical relationship. (e.g. it obeys an inverse square law, or an exponential law)

The analytical software would probably come to the same conclusions to a higher degree of assurance.
A chemist should be able to work answers out without relying on softwear. If you have to use a computer for everything, you have to have faith in the computer rather than your own abilities
