How should I prepare for Organic Chemistry?

I'll be taking organic chemistry in the fall and I'd like to know how to prepare for it ... like what kind of books should I start reading ahead of time before classes start. I really dont want to get behind in the class...

and for anyone who has had the class is it really as killer as i heard it was?? What kind of grades did you get in it?

Answer:
Orgo is not as bad as the whole world believes. I took one general orgo course and got an 86 and another orgo of biological molecules and got a 92. Review your mechanisms often and ask questions.

If you ever need help in the fall I will be open to your questions provided I have learned what you are learning. Each orgo course is different.
Well, prepare to start drinking from a fire hydrant...
It is a beeeeeeoootchhhhhh. Really.
I was a fantastic student, but that course sent me to my knees. By the end of the year, I was down to a D+, the only D I ever got in my life.
It sort of depends, though. Larger universities will have 2 tracks of organic, one for like chemical engineers and stuff and one that's a lighter track. I took the harder track, and it like to buried me.
I really don't think there is a whole lot you can do in advance to prepare, unfortunately. Organic is unlike any other class. Just jump on, hang on, and brace yourself for the ride.
Two things can make the class hard. One, is the analytical, three dimensional thinking trying to visualize molecules. That part was a breeze for me, I'm good at that.
The other thing that makes it hard is dealing with about 3 or 4 naming systems, and trying to memorize the mountains of equations for every synthesis imaginable out there.
Good luck!
