How does the use of AAS show the function of trace elements in the body?

I understand how Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy can be used to find trace elements within the body, but not how that data can be used to find the function of that trace element.

Answer:
my guess is, through tracking which element is present in which organs, and by tracing it´s movement around the body ( i.e. samples taken at even intervals of time from each organ). knowing more or less what each organ does allows for speculations of the role of these trace elements in the corresponding processes, therefore their function. most of them are co-factors for different enzymes, as far as i know.
