How will you differentiate a mixture from a compund?

i'm gonna have a quiz in chem in about 1 hour.

Answer:
Elements, Compounds, And Mixtures
Chemical Elements
These are defined as: ‘Substances which cannot be broken down into Simpler Substances by chemical means’
Some elements exist alone, such as - Nitrogen, Oxygen, Carbon, Gold, Silver, etc.
Compounds - These are formed from a chemical combination of two or more Elements in definite proportions, as in salt (NaCl).
Water is a compound of Hydrogen and Oxygen gases and, water has many different properties to those of the gases of which it is composed as does when Na and Cl form Salt.
The list of compounds found on earth is almost endless. Compounds cannot be separated by mechanical means - only by chemical reaction.
Mixtures: These are physical combinations of any number of materials and have no definite proportion. Mixtures can be separated by mechanical means - such as filtration, solution, distillation, ..etc.
Example: A mixture of salt water and sand can first be separated by filtering out the sand particles. The salt water can then be separated by distillation i.e. vaporisation and re-condensation of the water which will leave the salt in the bottom of the distillation apparatus.
Atmospheric Air is a mixture of Oxygen, Nitrogen, CO2 and other gases, all of which can be separated by physical means.
Well A mixture can be physically seperated but a compound is a bond that must be broken. A mixture will contain multiple substances where as a compound will contain two elements that ware combined to fore one substance. Like Sulfate. SO4 that is a compound.
this depends greatly on the compund/mixture in question, but a mixture can be separated in some physical manner (without changing the chemical makeup of any of the component substances) and a compund cannot.
