Cooling tower selection and performance is based on water flow rate, water inlet temperature, water outlet temperature and ambient wet bulb temperature. Under normal operating conditions, the temperature of the cooling water is 5-7oF above the ambient wet bulb temperature. However, in a particular cooling tower, the cooling water produced is 15oF higher than the ambient wet bulb temperature.
a)Discuss the possible causes that result the loss in efficiency in the cooling tower.
b)Discuss the actions that can be taken to improve the tower performance.
Answer:
a) Flow rate might be too high and/or the inlet temperature might be too high and/or inefficient contact between air and water.
b) decrease flow of water / increase air flow / increase contact surface area by using filler/low back-pressure packing
That's what I would look at first in an industrial setting (although I don't work there)
