Do you know what chemical they put in pools?
Answer:
Most people would think that it is chlorine, however is is actually sodium hypochorite which provides a source of chlorine when dissolved in water. A chlorine tablet(puck) is sodium hypochorite.
Chlorine.
chlo·rine (klôrn, -n, klr-) KEY
NOUN:
Symbol Cl
A highly irritating, greenish-yellow gaseous halogen, capable of combining with nearly all other elements, produced principally by electrolysis of sodium chloride and used widely to purify water, as a disinfectant and bleaching agent, and in the manufacture of many important compounds including chloroform and carbon tetrachloride. Atomic number 17; atomic weight 35.453; freezing point -100.98°C; boiling point -34.6°C; specific gravity 1.56 (-33.6°C); valence 1, 3, 5, 7. See Table at element.
Hope this helps! ;-)
CHLORINE
chlorine - or 'Cl' on the periodic table
Chlorine is the most commonly referenced chemical put in pools. But certainly not the only chemical. pH adjusting chemicals, and microbiocides are other examles.
Chlorine can be dosed as the gas, which is often economical, but inconvenient. More common compounds used to introduce hypochlorous acid/ hypochlorite ion (generating these is the goal of chlorination) are alkali and alkaline earth metal hypochlorites (sodium and calcium hypochlorites) as well as chlorinated isocyanurates. Chlorine can be generated in situ with an electrolysis cell converting salt to hypochlorous acid, hydrogen and sodium hydroxide.
Chlorine
The liquid form of chlorine is actually a solution of NaOCl (sodium hypochlorite).
The liquid acid they use is "muriatic acid" which is the industrial grade of hydrochloric acid (HCl)
Other solid sources of chlorine are used (in tablet form) but not by "the pool guy".(the answer that the tablets are sodium hypochlorite is wrong. I can't remember the chemical name or structure...I'd have to visit a pool supply store and read the label again.)
To disinfect, sodium hypochlorite solution is added in measured quantity, or you can bubble Cl2 gas in measured quantity. This is the common practice for pools.

A swimming pool is 'Chlorinated' i.e. Chlorine tablets are dissolved it the water as an anti-bacterial agent.
They consist of Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl).
(Some large systems use a controlled injection of liquid chlorine).
Well the most common chemical is reffered to as chlorine, but technically it is the chemical coumpound NaCl which chlorine in a salt form. This is because chlorine has a great ability to clean the pool, but at room temperature chlorine is a yellow gas. Also basic salts such as sodium carbonate are added to increase the pH of the water making it less acidic.
