In my chemistry book it has a formula AB2 (A and B are supposed to be substituted with other elements) having 2 bonds and no lone pairs, . and then it later has the formula AB2 having 2 bonding pairs and 1 lone pair.
So, i am confused on when lone pairs are used and when they are not?
Answer:
You insert a lone pair when the atom has a lone pair or more than one lone pair. If you are in the p-block, all the first row hybridizations are identical. It is only a matter of filling the orbitals with electrons. Mass, charge, and angular momenta are conserved.
