Economists, what is the deal with government mandated consumerism?

And can you think of other examples of such, besides safety items (like a laboratory providing fire extinguishers) or car insurance? And where do we draw the line as to what should be mandated or not? How would you classify such an economic system - commitalism? Is it the same thing to mandate 'safety' consumerism for an individual vs. a corporation (i.e. is a corporation's 'right to survive' on an equal footing with that of an individual?). Moreover, does something like car insurance prevent accidents or promote them? I don't know if there is any data on this, but I would think it would be more likely to promote them (careless driving due to the 'safety net').

Answer:
we are now the worlds consumers and they do our manufacturing this economy has been consumer driven since the 60's when corps saw the advantage of low wages overseas..just had to change the pesky trade laws to allow foreign goods in under certain circumstances profitable to certain companies...it is called rent seeking behavior, corporate welfare what have you and it is destroying our country as it is sold out from under us for a profit to a few
