Why does gasoline always priced with a 9/10th of a cent on it's price ?

I always wondered why gas has the 9/10ths. thing

where I live it is $3.499 ..why not just call it $3.50

there are no other products I can think of that are pticed in 10th od cents.

Answer:
This is only a continuation of the past legacy. There was a time when a cent was very valuable. A cent below the next dollar would be attracting the attention of the custmer that prices are below the next dollar level and a cent saved is. 5 cwents saved on 5 gallons was a goiod saving for buying something else for children. Today one cent has very little value..
The employment of this pricing strategy is merely a vestige of the past. In the tradition of attempted deception of American consumers, this pricing strategy has permeated the market of final sale gasoline for roughly seventy years. I am confident that we will soon see a gasoline company that will try to develop a rebellious or "fresh" public image by simply truncating the prices at the cent level.
