Can somebody compare & contrast: china's architecture and china's art in pre-communism and communism?
Answer:
They are both supported by the ruling house, first by the dynasties in power and later by the communists simply because supporting art serves as 1) a way to keep power, since most art supported religious subjects, it was a way to legitimize rule. 2)propaganda, the communists later advocated art that shed a good light on the party and its members.
The difference is in advancement in technology. Xia, Qin, Zhou used jade a lot, in addition to bronze and terra cotta, pottery. Pagodas were built that no longer are. Its hard to tell for architecture because wood was more likely to disintegrate so we have few remaining examples. Also, during the communist era, the Red Guards destroyed a lot of the art during the Cultural Revolution.
