Haven't people always wanted to make a profit?
I believe that the logical step past capitalism/socialism is an economic state where individuals have complete control over their own economic affairs. Each person effectively becomes a mini-corporation.
I have no idea how that works out, though.
More than likely we will all be slaves to some super Alien race.

nothing. capitalism was always there and will always be. there is no other way of dealing with the necessities of life. its even the natural way, even for animals. imagine u have some water and your neighbour has got some bread. u might wanna share it, so u both will survive. that's capitalism. the only thing that will change and will always change is the power. centuries ago the kings had the power and the money, nowadays its the wall street. the game never changes, only the winners and looser do.
All capitalism means is that individuals are allowed the freedom to make their own choices in the economy.
Why does something have to replace that?
There are only two choices - allow individuals that freedom or suppress it. There are various motives for suppressing it but the means and the results have historically been all the same.
The freer the economy the more wealth is produced and the more efficiently it is produced, and the better off everyone is. Everyone's benefit is not equal but everyone is better off than he otherwise would be - - - except for the few who would have benefited from centralized control, by virtue of being the controllers or their clients.
The argument for control is a sham - it is to take the inequality without the gains. It is to say "well the gains, they just happened, if we do it our way the gains would be more evenly shared" but to do it their way the gains don't happen - the only advances the Soviets and Chinese made when under Communism were military ones, and those they stole from the US!
They also say "we can't keep producing things with these specific resources forever." But nobody says we can - what you want is to use the resources we're using while we have them in plentiful supply and then develop and use methods to use other resources for the same purposes. Capitalism, via the price mechnism, tells producers when to switch resources and rewards those who come up with new ways to use them. No other model does this. We don't know what the replacement for oil will be - one would hope it's the resource capable of replacing oil the most efficiently. Only the market can determine that.
capitalism is not perfect, just ask any minimum wage worker working two jobs to pay the bills. Capitalism is not freedom, ask any child slaves in third world countries. what will come next? a better system, one that will allow the rich and powerful to completely dominate the rest of the world, were governments are no longer mere puppets, or drain on resources with the constant bribes. Where the poor are willing slaves that don't have free thought or resistance to oppression. genetics hold a lot of promise, perhaps someday they can create a whole generation of loyal slaves, and soldiers, that way all the resistant poor can be left to starve to death, and control be total.
Capitalism Ver.6.0 - Professional ( Capitalism with 10% market socialism, 7% market Communism and 8% market Isalamism).
A steady-state economy. There will be no growth and almost no new investments except those needed to replace old assets.
I suspect wages will be pretty high, public traded companies will focus on churning out dividends instead of growing and income will tend to be equitatively distributed.
Its the only phisical possible outcome other than colapse, because we cant grow forever unless interestelar travel develops.

The only possibility seems to be for Gandhism, where everybody thinks for the rest of the countrymen and tries to work for the betterment of the society as a whole.
People like do not understand life and prevent most of us from enjoying it, in peace and good health!
