What's the economy like in Thunder Bay as of May 2007?

I want to move and get a job in Thunder Bay as a millwright sometime this summer. What is the economy like there? Will jobs be in decline in the future? I've heard it will be a ghost town soon. Is this exageration?

What about the grain elevators shutting down? How bout the logging industry? Bombardier? I'm very interested in seeing something detailed, thought out. Can't find information on commerce / economy in Thunder Bay.

OIL SANDS - THUNDER BAY INITIATIVE

The following information will be of assistance to Thunder Bay firms interested in pursuing business opportunities in Alberta and the Oil Sands Industry.

Alberta – Inventory of Major Projects

The Inventory of Major Alberta Projects is produced by Alberta Economic Development to assist firms in identifying potential supply opportunities.

The Inventory lists major projects in Alberta, valued at $2 million or greater, that are planned, underway, or have recently been completed. Project data is obtained from public information sources. Where possible, this data has been verified with the project proponent/developer. However, users of the Inventory may wish to confirm project data with the proponent/developer.

While efforts have been made to obtain the most recent information, it should be noted that projects are constantly being re-evaluated by industry. Although the Inventory attempts to be as comprehensive as possible, some information may not be available at the time of printing, or not published due to reasons of confidentiality.

New projects and [where possible] updated information on current projects will be added to the Internet database on a monthly basis. Projects added to the Inventory between July 1 - September 30, 2006 are noted in UPPER CASE in the Project Description column.

Alberta Oil Sands

Construction of oil sands industry projects is a major driver behind the current level of economic activity in Alberta. Oil & gas and oil sands projects account for almost 69% of the value of all major projects listed by Alberta Economic Development [AED] in the Inventory of Alberta Major Projects.

During the operational phases of these projects - most will have life spans of 30 years or more - they will contribute to the economic well being of the province through long-term employment creation, purchases of goods and services, and payment of taxes and royalties.

AED produces the Oil Sands Industry Update to provide an overview of oil sands industry expansion, its effects on the region, and its impacts on departments of the Alberta Government to facilitate information sharing. The report is updated bi-annually.
