What are the benefits of living in a rural area and the disadvantages of living in an urban area?
Answer:
I recently made the choice to escape city life. I resided in a city of just under 500,000 and now live outside of a village of 370.
I made this choice for several reasons. I will elaborate on rationale for leaving city first:
1. Dramatic increase in traffic, crime, graffiti, drug use (addicts in street), litter etc.
2. General melancholy of most people in public, rude clerks in stores.. a sense of holiday blues that never lifted.
3. Lived in Desert southwest, with mounting concerns over global terror living in a desert city is unsafe and un natural. ie:minimal sources of natural food and water.
4. Have a young child whom I wanted to raise in a family oriented atmosphere. Was victim of school bullies. Many underachieving public schools.
5. A sense of being cut of and alone in spite of being surrounded by mobs of people.
6.Too many conveniences and a social/cultural move toward indulgences and excess. Keeping up with the Jones's is a sign of an empty life.
7. Mounting social pressures toward sexual freedoms amongst young people. A loss of family values that even as a NON religious person I find appalling.
Now as a member of a very rural area I enjoy many things that have become fairy tale to city dwellers.
1. I leave my keys in the ignition of my vehicle in my driveway.
2. I leave my doors unlocked, the sense of peace this carries is beyond words.
3. I recognize all of the neighbors and know a large portion of the people in my surrounding communities. In the city I barely knew one neighbor. Here people wave as they drive by your home/car. If you are stopped on a road people you do not know offer to help you, in the city I couldn't get the time of day.
4. Less congestion and a slower pace. This reduces personal stress and creates a harmonious community wherein people act politely.
5. Everyone knowing ones business is not such a bad thing as long as acting properly. In this way everyone knows who the trouble makers are and most are kept in line by fear of disgrace.
6. Churches and civic groups are often doing fundraisers for needy community members. Since these needy people are not faceless strangers everyone is eager to help and donate.
7. Children in schools are better behaved, although not without their issues. Difference is I can approach the parents because there is a good chance we have met somewhere.
8. I live in a farm community and am afforded the opportunity to produce a vegetable garden, chickens , eggs etc.
9. Less population increases personal space and privacy. there is no need to escape on a vacation, everyday here is chill!!
I do miss having a delivered pizza now and again, but I assure you nothing could ever convince me to move back to the urban nightmare. the only problem is the sprawl is headed our way. We are losing small communities to developers. city folks who want to escape just bring their culture with them and park it across the street. Archaic American values and traditions will be extinct someday, that will be a loss to us all.
One thing to consider is the environmental impact of living in the suburbs. When one lives in the suburbs it is necessary to drive everywhere. There is generally little or no public transportation. When one lives in an urban area they can walk or take public transportation where they need to go. So from a fossile fuel perspective, living in the suburbs is less "green".
Sorry. I guess I read the question the wrong way.
