Trade Deficit... better of restricting imports?
We would be better off if we restricted imports and reduced our balance of trade deficit
by encouraging exports only.

I disagree. Imports help us, we need resources that we don't have in our own country or resources that are too expensive to harvest from our own land so we can import that from other countries and refine it and make it into products which we can then export for money - even more then the cost of the resources we bought. We do need to make ourselves more independent so we don't rely to heavily on everyone else's economy
I just say we up the price of food that we export. Americans routinely pay more for products produced here than they cost overseas. That means we pay for other people to eat, while they keep upping oil prices, plastic products and what have not on us. Just make them pay more for the food, the prices will come way down. And don't forget, almost every country owes the World Monetary Fund. We are the WMF!
