What is it in the current British economy that makes the pound so much stronger than the US dollar?

Currently the conversion rate is $1.98 to 1.00 British pound. What is it about the British economy that makes it so strong? What's the UK's GNP? Besides Jaguars, Range Rovers, and Aston Martins, what else do people worldwide like to purchase that's British made?

Answer:
Britain doesn't have a 9 trillion dollar national debt like the U.S. does. So, actually the pound and all currencies are appreciating slowly in relation to the dollar.

The exceptions are the countries where run away inflation has/is destroying the value of their money.
Example: Zambia {sp}
Nothing. It's just that over recent decades the Bank of England has allowed a stingier growth rate in the supply of pounds compared to GDP growth than has our Fed.
Their money supply has slowly been shrinking, making the Pound that much more attractive.
