What are the chances of voluntary simplicity becoming the dominant lifestyle?
Answer:
Pretty slim. People are lazy, selfish, and spoiled.
What?! Next question!
I think it more likely that as we use up resources, and the rich/poor gap widens, that "involuntary simplicity" will become more dominant.
Sounds great to me, but I don't see it happening. Too many people feel forced into artificial stress and complication by the world around them.
It would ruin our economy........
But sign me up!!
very little --- people think the world turns for them there for they do not see things like other humans do!
I am just defining your terms in this context so I hope I get this right.,. The chances are one in twelve? ooh damn, I know I got that wrong.
Next to nothing.
It's becoming more prevalent in today's high pressure society. I'm considering dropping out myself! I have a fairly stressful job and now that my kids are all grown and gone, I'm considering getting a less stressful job (which unfortuantely will mean less pay), selling my house and getting a condo or apartment. Once you get a bunch of "stuff" you realize that you really don't need it and it just causes you to have more stress/responsibilities. I don't know how "simple" I would go though - still like to have modern emenities!
If I am understanding your question correctly, I would say slim unless it's forced on our society. Americans have become far too dependant on technology doing things for them that most have lost or have never been taught the means of survival w/out cell phones, computers, remote controls, cars/suv's, etc etc. I do know that several rural areas are trying to adopt this lifestyle, not give into the modern advances that seem to be dominating and creating a lazy world. We, in my home, use computers and cell phones but for the most part, are trying only to utilize them for work purposes. It's just difficult to know anything, do anything or learn anything new w/o technology cuz these days, the internet is the information super highway and if you don't use it, you lose it. It's unfortunate but hey, it's where the world is going and if you don't keep up, you're sure to fall behind. I just don't give in to all the new crap like cell phones that offer ridiculous features noone needs and things in that category. I don't think simplicity will ever dominate tho, I really don't. Sad, but true.
