Role of NGO's for consumer protection?

Actually, there is a good example of how this can be done here in the US. Developing countries might want to do the same thing.
Consumers Union can be considered an NGO, i.e. a non profit organization whose goal is to help the public. This NGO does a great deal of testing and research comparing various products to see which one is the best. It reports the results of its tests in the magazine "Consumer Reports." The results are also available online.
No one else including the government provides this kind of information. My favorite is their annual report on automobile reliability. Based on surveys of their members, they report on which cars have a high frequency of repairs and others a lot frequency. To my knowledge, this information is not available anywhere else. I suspect that even the automobile companies use these ratings to see how they compare with their competitors.
