Why are the gas prices so high?

three supporting facts of the effects of high gas prices

Answer:
The news keeps saying that prices have gone up because so many refineries are closing---my question would be WHY ARE THEY CLOSING. I can't help but think this is another "WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION" hoax by our wonderful president and Vice president who's livelihoods outside of the white house depend mostly on OIL !! If the price of oil has gone up even $20 a BARREL in the last 2 years, and a barrel hold 55 gallons, then the cost of 1 GALLON of oil from that barrel costs less then 37 cents more--then how come the price of oil has gone up OVER 1.45 PER GALLON over the past 2 years? That seems like a hell of a profit for the oil companies----Oh and it was reported that Mobile Oil had a profit of $300 MILLION in one quarter----guess where all the money is going that we pay extra for our gas.. right back to the people who run the oil companies... THEY are getting rich while everyone else gets poorer and poorer...when the price of oil keeps going up and up, the cost of EVERY SINGLE PRODUCT or FOOD that you purchase goes up because NOTHING moves around this country that runs on anything OTHER then gas and oil... Milk at almost $4,00 a GALLON? Did all the cows suddenly go on strike? NO---but the price of GETTING the milk to the stores went up because of gas prices.something's got to give and SOON---I see where lately gas prices are slipping EVER SO SLIGHTLY----it's NOT ENOUGH.and none of the other products have lowered THEIR prices to co-inside with the gas prices coming down a little...explain THAT one Mr. Bush.
Combination of supply and demand mixed with corporate greed.
They are that high because people have shown that they're willing to pay high prices for it.

As long as the oil companies are competing against each other, and not conspiring with each other, then that's simply free market economics at work.
Supply and demand and Pres. Bush
Gas prices are high because there is way too much government regulation involved in the market place. Right now there is around 30 different blends of gasoline that is used in different parts of the country - designed with the mindset of keeping the air cleaner in certain parts of the country. However the air is 90 percent cleaner than it was back in the 70s, so the 30 some odd blends of gas is not necessary.
What happens is when these blends are shipped to the areas, if one pipeline gets backed up, there are no reserves to make up for the shortage, and the price of gas goes up. Mix that with the fact that no new refineries have been built since longer than I have been around, so there is less capacity to produce gas.
- Then you have the government who says they don't want to depend on foreign sources of oil, yet they won't go after domestic sources of oil where it is plentiful - such as the pacific ridge.
-Oh and how about ethinol which is driving up the price of EVERYTHING.
The list goes on and on
