Why is: $ the symbol of US Dollar?

For example Euro is: € ...

Answer:
It is thought by some that the symbol for the dollar is actually the letters U and S overlaid on one another. If you look at older uses there are two lines through the S. The lower part of the U is the bottom of the S.
I think $ is not only for US Dollar, but for every kind of dollar, like Singapore dollar, Hong Kong dollar, etc.. like Singapore dollar, it's S$.. and US Dollar is US$..
I read a long time ago that the symbol for the dollar sign is actually from the days of pirates, centuries ago, who used pieces of eight as their common coins. The symbol for this coin was the number 8 with a vertical line drawn through it, which was adopted as the symbol of the U.S. dollar.
