What are the role of states in Industrial relations?

Answer:
Hmm! Since the late 1980's most states tried to curb and curtail labor unions. In fact, most of the unions are somewhat weaker in the year 2007 as compared to the 1970's. The major reason to this is because of global marketing and free global economy. Companies can threaten to relocate their businesses to other nations if the unions do not agree to behave in line. In fact, as the economy shifts to global free market economy many unions worldwide suffer. As people join the unions in lesser numbers its membership dues increase to cover the costs. Furthermore, people are getting more and more greedy and as prices increase the seek to lower the costs; so they do not join the unions in order to save few pennies. You must also consider the fact that most younger workers do not join the unions, hence most of their membership consists of people in late 40's all the way to 60's. It would be interesting to see the state of the unions in the next 25 years as both the global economy's increase and the increase of technology that will take over many jobs.
