How does Wal-Mart increase urban sprawl?

Wal-Mart forces many towns and cities to increase their city-limits and I'm curious as to how this is

Answer:
Walmart targets areas that are easy to access on freeways near suburban and urban areas. Walmart will put a store 5 miles from the center of the city, and then 10,000 new homes will be built around the Walmart. Then Walmart builds another store 5 miles further out and another 8,500 homes are built. Then a year later they build a store that is another 5 miles out and another 7,000 homes are built.

Thus the sprawl..
