Why does anyone think raising the federal minimum wage is a good Idea?

Most people who make minimum wage are high school kids, that dont suppost themselves. Anyone over 18 who isnt a ex con , hightschool dropout, or illegal alien can get a job paying over minimum wage. Big businesses pay well over minimum wage even for their lowest paying jobs. All raising the minimum wage will do is effect small business , so that they will either lay people off or raise prices. Its simple cause and effect. Do you think that a small businessman is just going take the money out of their own pockets? You will just be hurting every poor person with inflation just to help a few dependents temporarily.
Politicians only suppost this because they get more votes from simple minded people. Also, higher wages means more tax revenue so they can raise their own salaries. Finally if you're so concerned about minimum wage, push your state reps to raise your states minimum wage. Every state has a vastly different economy.

Answer:
I think raising a minimum wage as per the inflation rate (adjusted) is a fair policy. Other than that, those getting below poverty wages in need would probably be better served by tax credits or benefits along with educational opportunities to increase their productive value.

Ideally this would cause a drying up of labour in the low skill market that would necessitate an increase in wages through labour market principles (provided you don't have mass influxes of immigrant labour).

But as you imply, minimum wage earners are a small percentage of the population. Increasing their wages are not going to make a huge difference in the overall economy regardless.

Peace
I agree with you. Raising the min. wage will do nothing but create more tax's and all utilities will go up as soon as the wage goes up...It always does. You wind up with less. What we need are good paying jobs to begin with..
