How do we contribute in reducing social & economyc gap between reach and poor people/countries?

I am a 37 years old man who grew up in a very isolated village in Nias Island, North Sumatera Province, INDONESIA. I am the number 3 child (out of 6) of a father who has died in 1977 (when I was still 8 years old) from cancer. Through the hand of a tough hard working mother, I was able to get Bachelor Degree in Geology and Masters Degree (from a not very reputable institute) in Management. Having a quite broad understanding of the difficulties faced by the poor, I decided to dedicate part of my time and ability for social works. But the number one challenge I can hardly overcome for the time beeing is the financial one. Working as an Assistant Manager of Economyc and Business Development for Aceh-Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Bureau (BRR NAD-Nias), as a government bureau of rehabilitation and reconstruction for the Aceh and Nias Tsunami and Eathquake, seems not to be the best short term answer to the victims. I am now looking for advice and support from you all. Many thanks.

Answer:
The MOST important way for poor nations to lift themselves up out of the Third World is the establishment of: (besides the obvious - freedom and rule of law)

Enforceable Private Property Rights. (PPR)

The British established a system of Private Property Rights and the results can be seen in their colonies - the US, Canada, Australia, Kong Kong. Those Private Property Rights were implemented in Japan and Korea after WWII and the Korean War. Now they are well developed.

The best book ever written on this topic is:
The Mystery of Capital
by Hernando De Soto

I suggest you give it a good look. You would be shocked at the extreme amount of wealth in Third World countries that is simply going unused because enforcable private rights do not exist. If world leaders would take the advice in this book, extreme poverty in this world really would become a thing of the past.

The only way for poor in poor nations to get out of poverty is through PPRs. It is used to establish credit, collateral, and is protected and not stolen by governmnet. Once poor people of poor nations learn that their hard work results in something tangible and protected (private property), it motivates people to be innovative and work harder.

I know this won't be popular, but foreign aid is BUNK. It only teaches people and nations to be dependent. It keeps thugs in power.

.
Key is creating well-paying jobs, such as in export-oriented industries.

Non-profit organizations are not very efficient at that, although they are necessary to help establish rule of law, reliable transport and communication.

EDUCATION for the poor. DIY, and encourage others to take a year off to do so. Ideas from person to person are what make for motivation to succeed and pull away from poverty and the cycle of despair.
