Is Sierra Leonne richer than Namibia when it comes to diamonds industry?
many people are saying namibia is a poor country whereby there are no diamonds but my friend is saying namibia cannot be compared to sierra leone in diamonds, namibia is rich. which one is right?
Answer:
S.L is an impoverished country with scattered diamond deposits and a high rate of crime connected to the illegal mining.
Namibian diamond mining is controlled by De Beers' subsidiary Consolidated Diamond Mining(CDM). They do strip mining with heavy earth moving equipment to remove the overburden laying on top of the diamond bearing gravel conglomerate. They pay high wages and benefits to their mining employees. There is no looting or stealing/crime attached to the operations since it is all within the secured mining areas along the west coast. CDM produces a certain quota output per month based on an annual projection of diamond demand. The Namibian laws are very strict against illegal diamond buying(IDB)
The Namibian diamond supply is almost infinite since not all areas along the coast have been mined in addition to the offshore mining with dredges.
Maybe as a total population the Namibians do not benefit from the mines other than those who work there. The Government collects the taxes on the mining, however, since the country became independent and are run by a Black government, very little is actually going into maintaining the infrastructure of the country that was put in place during the old South African Administration.
The main beneficiary of the Namibian diamond mining is the parent company De Beers and Anglo American. . .and their stock holders.

The population of Namibia is much smaller, so its diamond exports do more good, especially as the revenues are not spent on weapons there thank god. And its economy (like all those of nations so far away from the equator) is much better - the average person in Namibia has a much better standard of living than in S.L. Angola is now the biggest exporter of diamonds, as S.L./West Africa has UN sanctions on it.
Namibia is not rich, but S. L. is very poor, with a terrible life expectancy & infant mortality. Sometimes countries with lots of oil are still poorer than countries with none - it's ot so easy to generalise.
