Microeconomics?
a newspaper item reported that two-thirds of all mothers who work outside the home "do it for the money, not by choice." are those really alternatives? either for the money or choice?
Answer:
This problem varies greatly depending on the society you are talking about for example in the UK its very common to find families with both parents working whereas in countries like Mexico the mum will stay in the home no matter how poor the family is. I think it has to do with social norms rather than poverty. In the UK if a family is poor both parents will work because they consider monetary provision a necessity for their child, i countries like Mexico however wher the mother taking care of the child is considered more important than providing it with monetary goods the mother would stay at home.
To answer your question i do think that a need for money means that often people dont have a choice conserning what they do. Read the article below on market insentives for organ transplants. The same principle applies people dont really have a choice when they need the money.
That does sound sort of lame; if you need the money...it's not really a choice, is it? Unless they really love their job or career...they probably aren't going to work for enjoyment :) So, I say no, that statement is misleading (esp. out of context).
